POLICY POSITIONS All Current Internship Positions

President's Office
Research Intern

Reports to:

  • Fred L. Smith Jr., President and Founder

Duties Include:

  • Researching
  • Outlining, editing and proofing speeches and writings
  • All other duties as needed

Skills needed:

  • Ability to research using the internet and the library
  • Good communication skills and the ability to think quickly
  • Ability to prioritize while working in a fast paced environment
  • Sense of humor

High Tech Department
Research Intern

Reports to:

  • Wayne Crews , Vice President for Regulatory Policy, Director of Technology Studies

Duties Include:

  • Researching issues such as: broadcast flag, telecom bill, intellectual property, privacy (national ID, biometrics, Internet privacy)
  • Identifying how new technologies affect law and policy
  • Proposing ways to advocate for legislative and regulatory reform
  • Possibility of publishing in CEI publication or outside publications
  • All other duties as needed

Skills needed:

  • A solid understanding of Internet and computer technologies and of the principles of economics and government
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing
  • Tech savvy
  • Libertarian

Communications Department
Media Intern

Reports to:

  • Jody Clarke , Vice President for Communications

Duties Include:

  • Archiving CEI materials
  • Media pitching
  • Op-ed placement
  • Making news clips
  • All other duties as needed in the Publications, Web and Media Relations departments

Skills needed:

  • Strong writing and communication skills a must
  • Experience in editing and proofreading a plus
  • Computer skills

Legal Department
Legal Intern

Reports to:

Sam Kazman, General Counsel

Duties Include:

  • Assisting with the Free Market Legal Program/”Death by Regulation” Project
  • Research on regulatory and legal issues in such areas as:
    • - the health impacts of delays in the availability of new medical drugs and devices - the real costs of energy efficiency mandates.
    • - environmentalist attitudes towards affordable energy
    • - legal research for ongoing and planned litigation

Skill needed:

  • Ability to understand and research technical and legal literature

Global Warming and International Environmental Policy Department
Global Warming and Energy Intern

Reports to:

Myron Ebell , Director of Global Warming and International Environmental Policy

Duties Include:

  • Researching
  • Writing
  • Attending meetings and Congressional hearings
  • Helping to arrange meetings and events
  • Clerical tasks
  • All other duties as needed

Skills Needed:

  • Undergraduate degree in Communications or English preferred
  • Basic computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Research)
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to work well with others

Environment Department
Environment Intern

Reports to:

  • Wayne Crews , Vice President for Regulatory Policy, Director of Technology Studies

Duties Include:

  • Researching issues such as: health and safety aspects of nanotechnology, private conservation/ecology, environment as “religion”, invasive species, ocean policy, groundwater protection, airshed management and more
  • Possibility of publishing in CEI publication or outside publications
  • Clerical tasks
  • All other duties as needed

Skills Needed:

  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing
  • Basic computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Research)
  • Libertarian
  • Ability to work well with others

 

Policy Internship

  • Researching
  • Writing
  • Attending meetings and congressional hearings
  • Helping to plan and arrange seminars, meetings and Congressional visits
  • All other duties as needed

Skills Needed:

  • Graduate Student in international economics or international trade
  • Basic computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Research)
  • Excellent research. Writing and communication skills
  • Must be well organized

Development Intern

Reports to:
Terry Kibbe, Vice President for Development

Duties Include:

  • Researching potential donors and supporters of CEI
  • Help with administrative tasks such as mailings and database entry

Skills Needed:

  • Good research skills , familiarity with internet research resources a plus

Special Projects Department
Administrative Intern

Reports to:

Megan McLaughlin , Director of Finance and Operations

Duties Include:

  • Scanning, filing and cataloging of President's research, writing and speeches
  • Conversion of Word documents so they can be edited or revised
  • All other duties as needed

Skills Needed:

  • Great organizational skills
  • Knowledge of computer programs like Word and Adobe
  • Patience and drive
  • Ability to work well with little or no supervision

Special Projects Department
Library Intern

Reports to:

Megan McLaughlin , Director of Finance and Operations

Duties Include:

  • Organizing and cataloging CEI's library
  • The creation of an issue area catalog with focus on the President's projects
  • Organization of media specific materials
  • Some scanning of documents
  • All other duties as needed

Skills Needed:

  • A degree in or familiarity with library science
  • Basic computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Research)
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to work well with others

 

Special Projects Department
Website updating and posting, part-time

Dynamic nonprofit organization seeks a part-time person to maintain several project website by posting articles, news releases, events announcements, and other items. Must be web-savvy and a self-starter. For fall and spring semesters – about 15 hours per week. Small stipend.
